Sanitation and sterilization

It is so important for a permanent cosmetic professional to use sanitation and sterilization procedures.

Think about it… would you want the tools that touched other people’s dead skin, sweat, etc. to come in contact with your skin? Improper tool sanitation will have residue from acne, cold sores, pink eye, hepatitis and other germs. There are many sanitation horror stories so here’s how to ensure you don’t have a negative experience.

SANITATION AND STERILIZATION PROCEDURES

A permanent makeup artist’s sanitary regimen is very important to your health. To avoid contamination with bacteria, keeping products and tools clean is necessary.

Here are a few basic sanitation items to look out for:

1. Hand washing: ensure the professional always clean their hands before applying anything on you. There should be an antibacterial soap near their station.
2. Use of disposable tools: there should be closed containers of new wands, tissues, brushes, spatulas, cotton balls, needles etc.
3. Ensure there is a bottle of 70% Isopropyl Alcohol and it’s used for disinfection of hands and equipment surface. Only 70% Isopropyl Alcohol solution is able to kill microorganisms by destroying the plasma membrane and is more effective than 100% alcohol.

The Public Health department controls permanent makeup procedure mandates but not all professionals are diligent with what is required so you have to protect yourself. Some other things to assess during your consultation is if the following is done:

• Covered light fixtures, spray bottles and parts of the micropigmentation pen/machine that cannot be cleaned and disinfected (e.g. the cord).
• Toronto Public Health highly recommends that you use pens or machines that use pre-packaged, sterile, single-use parts. A new plastic wrap must be used for each client.
• Clean and disinfect headrests, worktables, and chairs between clients.
• Use a new pair of single-use disposable gloves for each client.
• Dispense creams, lotions, ointments, and ink in a manner that prevents contamination.
• The needles must be sterile and discarded immediately after use into an approved sharps container. Sharps containers cannot be discarded with municipal garbage.
